Yoga Positions to Counter Migraines

Migraines are caused by stress, dieting, insufficient sleep, allergic reactions amongst other causes. The symptoms include headaches, nausea, pain and sensitivity to sound and light and they can make the victim's life unbearable. Apart from medication, there are other natural ways to handle this condition. Some of the physical therapy routines can reduce the occurrence or effects of migraines. For instance, yoga positions to relive the migraines are easy. They relax the nerves and relieve the pangs. Practically, using the thumbs, a person needs to massage the cheeks in clockwise movement. It does not involve force, just enough to loosen up the nerves. As the procedure goes on, the person will feel a comforting movement under the skin as the nerves start to loosen up. The person should avoid moving the head and instead have the hands going round the cheeks. This should be done for four minutes while inhaling and exhaling deeply. The aim of this technique is to lessen pressure and enhance transfer of oxygen through the blood vessels.

A person should sit in a comfortable pose so that the whole body benefits from this technique. In addition, since the mind is also tense because of the migraines, yoga positions can minimize this. The mind needs to be relaxed and the pressure points soothed so that the blood vessels can calm down. The person should put the palm of the right hand on the forehead with the bottom part a few inches from the nose. He or she should push the palm up and down gently while breathing in and out deeply. This cools the nerves around the forehead. If the condition persists, the person should put one hand on the head and massage it gently. This should be done round and round the front part of the head until the person feels the tension clearing up.

However, it is important to remember that yoga positions should not replace the taking of medication. Yoga may alleviate the pain but it does not cure the condition. There is another routine that can help to cleanse the air passage. This will help transfer sufficient air in and out of the lungs. However, a person should be careful not to deprave the lungs or to cause an overload. This method is called Kapalabhati. The person should breathe normally twice. Next, the person should breath in and then out until the stomach pushes outward. This should be done 20 times while elongating the breathing out routine throughout. The next step involves inhaling, exhaling, inhaling completely and holding the breath for some seconds. This depends with the duration a person can hold the breath. This technique allows the lungs to supply air to organs that may be lacking it due to the expanding of some blood vessels. All these techniques should be done in an airy room to enhance the healing process.

It's one thing to do breathing exercises and a stretching yoga pose like the Crescent, to help you relax and limber up. But eventually, if you are serious about developing a general level of tone and fitness, you'll need to move on to yoga postures that start to stretch you. Work up bit by bit to the more difficult poses. And the Palm Tree may be your next step.

There are two slightly different versions, one with your arms loose and flowing, and the other with them stretched and taut. You may start with the easier one and work toward the harder, or do the harder one first and then relax with the less strenuous form. If you want to push just a bit, begin by doing the Palm Tree with your fingers locked.

Stand straight with your feet hip distance apart. Interlock your fingers together and then stretch your arms outward and upward, turning your palms toward the ceiling. Lift onto your toes, stretching the palms upward and stretching every part of your body. Hold for a few seconds, and come back down and lower your arms slowly. Repeat this process three or four times. And after you're proficient, you add a step or two forward, which will help you develop grace and balance.

For the more relaxed version, stand as before, but lift your arms separately above your head, relaxing the shoulders. Wave your arms back and forth together, like a swaying palm tree. Keep the rest of your body straight, with only your shoulders and arms relaxing and moving.

Doing the more rigid version of the Palm Tree will help your posture and even assist your digestive system. The more flowing version will release tension in your upper body. Doing sets of both versions will do all of these things and infuse you with a great sense of well-being.

Prenatal Yoga For A Healthier Birthing Process

"Congratulations!!!!! You are going to be a mommy soon." What an immense joy I had when heard those words. My brain started racing with anticipation and anxiety. All good food habits and exercise regimes started popping in my head. And then I thought of Yoga. Can yoga help me through all these months? Is there any prenatal yoga posture that can enhance the healthy development of my baby?

We desire to stay in shape even when we are grumpy, nauseated and bloated, seeking ways to accomplish our objective, while keeping the little caterpillar safe in our wombs. We may exercise at the gymnasium or swim in the pool, yet with precautions and feasible posture guidelines, prenatal yoga prepares you for the birth process, in addition to keeping in shape. It has been observed that expecting mothers who had given a shot at prenatal yoga, give birth to healthy and well-developed babies, who in their later years grow up to be well-adjusted human beings.

In the first trimester, inverted yogic postures like Cow pose (Gomukhasana) and Cat pose (Bidalasana) aids in strengthening the abdominal muscle. Meanwhile, Child pose (Balasana) helps in toning the muscles of chest and pelvis for easy childbirth and feeding.

In the second trimester for making birthing easier, hip joints and muscles must be more flexible. Yoga positions like Ardha Chandrasana, Pigeon, Baddha Konasana Warrior II and Triangle, will improve flexibility and consequently easier birth process. In the third trimester practice the birthing breath (deep breathing), take deep breaths through the nose and exhale through the mouth.

During these nine months the body produces relaxin that intends to soften bones and ligaments to accommodate the growing baby. Hence, you're body is vulnerable to wear and tear. Therefore, avoid extreme yogic positions, and if necessary discontinue.

6 Ways to Prepare for a Week of Intense Training

You have just found out that you will be taking part in an Intense training camp for 5 days straight. Maybe a job requirement or the desire to get in shape. Bootcamp or a basketball camp, maybe a week of brutal Russian martial arts training- who knows? Bottom line, you've made up your mind: it is going to be tough.

On top of that, you only have 3 days to prepare, during which you have to work, make meals, look after the kids, and run a couple of last minute errands. All in all you have very little time to optimize your systems for what is to come.

The following 6 tips will hopefully take the edge off and give you a solid foundation for an intense week of training.

Hydrate your system: Proper hydration takes time. Start drinking a few days prior to your event. Avoid drinking large quantities at a time. Rather, sip little amounts throughout the day, all day. You want to make sure you do not deplete your body of minerals and vitamins by over drinking and therefore over-eliminating.

Stay away from energy drinks, carbonation, fructosy-glucosy drinks, coffee, tea and alcohol. Stick to water.

Regulate your eating and diet: Make sure you eat well. Keep it simple; salads, raw fish, fresh greens and vegetables. A good dose of fruits and nuts to supplement your main diet, be it vegetarian or not. Make sure you do not eat late or before sleeping.

Frankly, this is how our diet and eating habits should be all the time. Giving extra attention to your diet will go far in terms of sustenance and nutrition, but also as a psychological pillar.

Firstly, it will mean that you are slowing down your day-to-day pace, which is very good for your nervous system, but also you will feel more "wholesome" knowing that you care, feed, and look after yourself in a healthy manner.

Push ups, squats and sit ups: The trinity of body maintenance, I highly recommend the following regimen twice a day, everyday.

3 minutes of push ups, 2 minutes of squats, 1 minute of sit ups.

You can take breaks as needed, but try to accomplish as many per set, without sacrificing good form (in push ups it means planking your body and going as low as possible without touching the ground, and coming up to a position where arms are straight. In squats, keep your back straight, and heels to the ground. In sit-ups make sure your chest does not slouch inward, and your head does not tilt forward or backward).

Mimic, imitate and practice: Unless you have little idea of what will be expected of you, take the time to practice moves that will be required of you.

If it is basketball, you know that you will be required to do a lot of stop and go, and lot of jumping. If wrestling, you can practice transitions from standing to lying down, or may want to lie on the ground with a bit of weight on your chest.

Take the time to exaggerate each move, make sure you breath, and practice slowly, especially if new and unfamiliar with the discipline.

Stretch: Not everybody is flexible or "free" in their movement the same way. In order to avoid injury, I would like to offer an alternative to what we commonly understand as a stretching. Coupled with proper breathing this is the safest manner to get rid of tension without actually risking a tear in muscle or connective tissue.

Twice or three times a day spend about 1 minute stretching like you would when you wake up in the morning. Try it in different positions and try to slowly engage as many parts of your body. Make sure you breath.

Rest well: Quintessential to surviving hardcore training, proper rest, prior, during and after an Intensive will give you the necessary sharpness to better perform, follow directions, learn and process information and data. You will also heal better and feel better.

Rest does not necessary mean sleep. It can be considered as a space where the mind and body can forget and unplug from stress and anxiety causing conditions. However, sleep is the best way to rest and recuperate.

The above tips are for the average person who may or may not have a basic level of fitness, however everybody can benefit from them. Enjoy!

Always seek the advice of a physician prior to starting any training regimen.

Why Homeopathic Treatment?

Why homeopathic treatment in Austin?

With so many choices available to you for bettering your health in Austin and central Texas, what makes homeopathy a viable solution?

The goal of this article is to describe four major benefits of homeopathic treatment for you in your life. This is to arm you with knowledge about this profound and effective healing modality as you consider various options for your health care needs.

First, homeopathy is safe, gentle, and a reliable method of healing. It was formally established as its own system of healing in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. Hahnemann was a German physician who had become very discouraged about the medical practices of his time, namely blood letting, and the heavy use of purgatives and emetics, just to name a few. He sought a much gentler and safer way to help his patients. Not only did he succeed in that goal, but he also found a form of true healing that provides lasting relief. Through homeopathic treatment, the end goal is the complete annihilation to that person's susceptibility for their current illness. In this way, Dr. Hahnemann formulated a true medical healing art.

Second, homeopathy is non-toxic, non-habit forming, and will not interfere with current medications you may be on. In fact, throughout homeopathic treatment, your constitution becomes stronger and your vitality increased; such that you are less and less dependent on the medications over time. After full homeopathic treatment, patients frequently find themselves having no co-pays for a medication they once thought they may have had to always take. There are no side effects to taking homeopathic remedies. Nor are there any invasive procedures or expensive exams during homeopathic treatment, which cuts way back on its cost. Even though it is a fee-for-service profession, it is a far more economical selection of healing than any other conventional treatment for health and wellness purposes.

Third, during homeopathic treatment, you will receive homeopathic remedies, which are made mostly from plants and simple minerals. Homeopathic remedies are FDA approved. They seek to initiate the inherent healing response your body naturally has. Take, for example, a cut on your finger. Over time, your body will naturally heal that cut without any intervention on your part. That same healing intelligence of the body (we call it the Vital Force) is what homeopathy works with - not against. In conventional treatments, your symptoms get suppressed in the name of offering you immediate relief. Yet, those very symptoms, even though they are uncomfortable, are not meant to be suppressed. They are your body's natural and intelligent response to let you know something is wrong. In homeopathy, the remedies work with your body's attempt to heal, and do so in safe, gentle, and reliable ways.

Fourth, the scope of homeopathy is profound - it is useful for most mental, emotional, and physical complaints, both acute and chronic (long-standing). This means homeopathy is useful for you if you have any commonly understood pain, illness, and/or condition. The real benefit in this is that it's individualized to your unique symptom picture: mentally, emotionally, and physically. In this way, homeopathy does not treat, prevent, or cure diseases, as conventionally understood. Rather, it works to restore balance and provide healing for YOU. There is not one homeopathic remedy to take for gout, or allergies, or depression, for example. Rather, there is a homeopathic remedy that is selected for YOU, as you are experiencing your unique symptoms related to the disease you have, as well as how it impacts you mentally and emotionally. Considering all of that, homeopathy is one of the most complete systems of healing available in the world today.

Because homeopathy is safe, works with your body's ability to heal itself, is economical, and comprehensive, it is a viable and useful modality for your healing needs. People commonly see a homeopath for the following: anxiety/depression, ADD/ADHD, PMS/menstrual irregularities, menopause, prostate health/ED, allergies/asthma, ear infections, coughs, the flu, headaches, joint pains/arthritis, fibromyalgia, constipation/diarrhea, bladder infections, plus much more.

In this article, I outlined four main benefits to undergoing homeopathic treatment. My intent is to provide information to you so you make educated choices regarding your natural health needs.

Noel Peterson is a Classical Homeopath practicing in Austin, Texas. He is the founder and practitioner for the Austin Clinic of Homeopathy. His goal is to make homeopathy more widely available and accessible for residents of the greater Austin community, as well as the greater state of Texas. He maintains values of professionalism, integrity, and is completely committed to you as your practitioner. Noel intends on keeping homeopathy a viable and easily accessible solution for your health needs.

Consider Moxonidine in Diabetic Hypertension

Moxonidine should be considered a possible addition to therapy in hypertensive diabetic patients who are not controlled on ACE- inhibitors.

According to study, further pharmacological options are required to address the burgeoning cardiovascular disease epidemic, to which diabetes and the metabolic syndrome are contributing. Although clinical trials have been able to show improvements for patients on lifestyle intervention programs, in clinical practice the results with exercise or dietary therapies are often disappointing.

ACE-inhibitors should be considered the first choice therapy; but if you still can't control your patients, then moxonidine, arguably, should become an option.

Moxonidine is a potent antihypertensive with a high selectivity for imidazoline receptors. Unlike most other antihypertensives it also has a positive effect on insulin resistance.

Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are such a problem in diabetics because insulin resistance doubles the risk of a cardiovascular event. Studies have shown that the risk of cardiovascular disease rises proportionally with increasing insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is not only a problem in overweight patients but also in older patients, particularly post-menopausal women... certainly don't want to use an antihypertensive that increases insulin resistance.

Beta-blockers have been shown to increase the risk of impaired glucose tolerance in patients with normal baseline glucose tolerance.

Of particular interest is the fact that although other hypertensive agents, such as beta-blockers, may lead to increases in body weight, moxonidine therapy appears to attenuate weight gain.

The MARRIAGE study (Moxonidine And Ramipril Regarding

Insulin And Glucose Evaluation) is currently comparing the effects of moxonidine and ramipril on blood pressure and glycemic control in overweight patients with mild to moderate hypertension and impaired fasting glycemia.

Best Ice Cream Makers 2011

Ice cream, where would the world be without them. Man has been eating the stuff since he started scooping handfuls of snow and flavoring it with syrups of his choice. In fact many of the recipes that we use even today are as old as the Persian Empire that first started the trend. More than 2500 yrs ago, Persian Emperors had horsemen relay snow from the high up mountains where snow was present even is summer down to them so that they can have ice cream in summer.

The first patent for ice cream makers was issued in the 1930s and since then although there have been advancements in design, the old ones still hold sway. I have reviewed many of the leading manufacturers in the market and give you our verdict on which the best one is for your home.

Simac Gelato

Truly, the Italians have understood man's need for ice cream much better than we have. The Simac Gelato is a very small machine and makes only one quart, lesser even than the tiny counter top options that you have. They have however understood that you do not plan in advance to have ice cream; you eat it when you want it. They therefore have made their machines fully integrated with a refrigeration unit so that all you need to do is to put in the ice cream mix into the canister and press the button.

No waiting, and the only preparation that you need is to ensure that you have a ready supply of ingredients in your home. This is our first choice because at $200 they give you everything except maybe quantity, but then if you want more, you just put in another batch. It gets done in half an hour's time and you can always make two batches before you eat them while another one gets done in the mean time.

White Mountain 6 quart automatic maker

This is our second option because of the capacity that it gives you. A 6 quart machine is massive. Since you are making it at home, you can control the amount of sugar that goes inside and compensate with quantity with your kids. We give this second place because at $200 it costs just as much as the Gelato, but comes with a much much bigger capacity, and if you have kids at home, you need quantities. As long as you have a refrigerator that can keep supplying you with enough ice cubes, you can pretty much keep making ice cream the whole day long, although why anyone would want more than one batch is beyond our guess.

Cuisinart ICE 45 soft serve maker

The Cuisinart ICE 45 comes in the third place ahead of other similar soft serve makers because they give you a 1.5 quart capacity. Although there are may such machines in the market and some that are even cheaper, this is one of the largest capacities for soft serve machines. If you freeze the inner canister then you get sufficient ice cream for a small family, and this is more than enough. Because this is a soft serve option, the volume of ice cream that you get is also much more, plus you get to add in up to four extra ingredients that you like with their add on plastic jars.

There may be other machines that some of us may feel is much better. Everyone has a different need and the best one for them may not be the best for everyone.

Your tumble drier becomes redundant and there's no more need for radiators in your kitchen... or in the surrounding rooms.

How many miles does an Aga travel? The Aga cooker is made right here in the UK so although it's heavy, it doesn't have to travel far. As well as employing a whole load of highly skilled people in otherwise sleepy Shropshire, the company has shelled out a grand £7 million so far to ensure carbon and other emissions from the foundry are cut to the bone. In fact it's so important to the local area and the nation's industrial history that the Aga cookers factory has been named a UN World Heritage site!

If you are seeking advice about Aga cookers, or what just like to find out more about how an Aga could transform your kitchen, call Edwards & Godding on 01189 393 046.

Stainless Steel Knives - 3 Great Tips To Prevent Rust

There is nothing more frustrating than spending an exorbitant amount of money on so called 'quality' stainless steel knives only to have them rust within 6 months of use. What most folks don't know is that most stainless steel knives are made with a mixture of carbon and iron which is far from rust proof.

This means that without adequate care, the chromium oxide added to protect most blades can wear off leading to corrosion of the knives.

The good news is that there are a few tips that you can follow to avoid your knives from succumbing to rust. Knowing what works and what to avoid will make sure your stainless steel knives stay looking as good as new. Have a look at the tips below.

• First, never soak your knives in soapy water - Do not even submerge them in soapy water. This will cause them to develop stains and with time, the stains will eventually bring about rust spots. This inevitably means that that they will eventually have to be replaced.

• Next, you should wash off any salty or acidic food immediately -Once you're done cutting your onions and lemons, walk over to the sink and rise your knives soon after. This is because when left to sit on the blade, salty and acidic foods can cause corrosion.

• Lastly, do not use the dishwasher to wash your knives - It is not advisable to use the dishwasher to wash your stainless steel knives. Most dishwasher detergent contains bleach that will cause discoloration of the blades. Simply scrub the blade gently with a soapy cloth or scrubber and rinse in cold or warm water. You may then dry your knife with a clean cloth.

Follow the tips above and you will be guaranteed to own stainless steel knives that will stay looking good for years to come.

Beginner Beer Making Kits

Modern beer making kits make brewing beer at home a pleasure nowadays. You could have tasted home brew in the past and thought it was pretty terrible. However things have really advanced in the last several years and you can now brew beer that could be pretty much as good or even better than beer you buy at the shop. Beer kits are really easy to use and you don't need to spend a lot to get an amazing outcome, the only real trick is to make use of superior beer making equipment and brewing ingredients.

There are so many styles of beers available to brew at home, which can be brewed with even the most basic beer kit and you would achieve a great outcome. A major piece of advice is to buy the best equipment you are able to buy since it will last a very long time.

Beer Kits
There are several different techniques to make beer at home, the simplest way is by using a cheap and readily available beer making kit. A kit will make amazing beer, they even come with guidelines and what you need to produce your first beer, it can be a great way to begin.

Beer Making Ingredients
After you have some experience making beer with kits, you can begin to get imaginative and mess around with all your ingredients. Because you already have all the equipment you will need, good beer ingredients are all that may be required to experiment with making all the beer you like!

The beer ingredients you use are very important and you should get the best available. My personal selection is always to opt for premium beer kits, which have been formulated to adopt the kinds of flavours you would expect from a commercial beer. Many kit beer ingredients include a can of syrup, that's really evaporated wort (the stuff that flavors the beer). If you use these, all you need to do is add water, yeast and sugar and leave it to ferment, but very easy recipes like this will usually be deficient on taste. A better kit will often replace the sugar by using a 'brew enhancer', such as a malt extract or a sugar that's less difficult to ferment, such as dextrose. These additives change the body and finish of the beer, which can make an exceedingly big difference.

Making Beer
Beer simply consists of fermented malt, hops, wheat and barley, nonetheless it is the way these work together that really makes the beer. Thanks to the increase in popularity of beer kits, the available brewing ingredients has also expanded. If you really want to experience great tasting beer, then I suggest you buy the best brewing ingredients that you can afford. You will still be far better off than if you bought commercial beer at the shop.

Beer Making Tips
Most beer making kits have instructions for you to follow and I really propose you do so. They will help you make very good every time. Some other tips that might also help are:

1. Sanitize and cleanse everything.
2. Use filtered water.
3. Aerate your water as you add.
4. Make use of hot and cold water to get your wort to the right temperature before inserting the yeast
5. Take a hydrometer reading before and after fermentation to ensure it is complete..
6. Rehydrate your yeast 30oC water for 30 minutes before introducing it to your fermenter,
7. The more consistent you can maintain your temperature to the perfect temperature for the yeast, so much the better your beer shall be.
8. Don't over prime your bottles with sugar - they will explode.
9. Clean your bottles and rinse thoroughly to remove any smells and tastes.
10. Do not test your beer for at least 2 weeks, 4 weeks is best. If that is difficult, start putting together another batch so as not to wait next time!

Hopefully these tips will be effective and all your beer making will be a success!

Answers on Why Women Love Chocolate

It is a known fact that women love chocolate; in fact, 75% of the chocolate purchasers are women in USA only. In Switzerland it is said that they consume it in double dose. But why is that? Why do women love chocolate? Is there any logical explanation to this fact? Some scientists have considered the fact that in the chocolate there is an ingredient to stimulate some processes that are similar to those of sexually arousing. But this is mostly a presumption and not based on real facts.

There is however another explanation that goes for the feeling of happiness that one must have when eating chocolate and as such stimulating some brain chemicals to induce a better state of mind. But this is again a fact not based on reality as these chemicals have been proven to break real fast not allowing one to stay that 'high' for a long period of time.

A theory that seems to be widely accepted is that sugar and fat were considered essential for prehistoric men's survival and as long as these ones exist in chocolate, it can bring inside the hunger center of the brain the satisfaction and as such making us feel happy. This sort of effect has been stronger felt upon women, especially the ones who have a binge eating history. But all these are still under debate, although there could be a non-scientific explanation that you should also be acknowledged of: the way chocolate melts in the mouth.

This aspect is the most enjoyable one. Just consider the process for a few moments_ you introduce the chocolate in your mouth and feel how this one softly melts in softening up its texture on the tongue. The silk feeling can be compared with the passionate kiss of your lover. Then the way chocolate continues to wrap around your tongue releasing the fragrance of cacao that stimulates your senses like the smell of your lover's body. It looks almost like the prelude of a love affair.

Maybe this is also the reason why chocolate makes a perfect gift for Valentine's Day and it has to be chosen accordingly as perhaps not all of it is appropriate for the lover's present. This is why you should consider the factor of melting rather than the flavor when choosing a box of chocolate for your beloved one for celebrating the Valentine's Day. Maybe chocolate truffles can be a good choice, and why not try with the organic chocolate truffles to make the gift complete and unique as well.

The World's Best Chocolate

Chocolate comes in various flavors and textures, and people enjoy this one accordingly. Some prefer it milky and sweet, while others would go for dark and bitter. But regardless of their types, there are some chocolates considered the best in the world by the chocolate experts, and these chocolates are:

* Italian - to be more specific, the ones made in Tuscany, Amedei's Chauo that was voted by the London Academy of Chocolate being awarded the gold medal. It has been praised for its unique character and fruity flavor. The second place was won also by an Amedei producer - Amedei Porcelana and Amedei 9.

This brand started its production in 1990, when the master chocolate Cecilia Tessieri and his brother Alessio Tessieri founded Amedei chocolate that is presented as dark, glossy and rich bars. There are few shops in the USA that sell this brand, but it costs very much, but for once in a lifetime it really worth it spending some money and have a taste of the world's best.

* French - is still considered one of the best and refined chocolate in the world due to the fact that there are strict regulations not to use vegetable or animal fat when the chocolate is manufactured; as a result only cocoa butter is the ingredient that can be used giving the end product a rich original flavor of exotic cocoa.

More than this, French chocolate contains a minimum of 43% cocoa liquor and most of the chocolate products have a pure content of cocoa liquor. For instance, French dark chocolate as well as bonbons have up to 82% pure cocoa liquor, this is why the French chocolate taste is so rich and luxurious.

* Belgian - is considered the best of gourmet chocolate. Based on excellent quality ingredients as well as traditional techniques of manufacturing, Belgian chocolate belongs to its own distinct place that makes it so unique among the wide range of chocolate of mass production in the world.

More than 170,000 tons of chocolate are produced annually in Belgium and innumerable chocolate shops are spread throughout the country, such as they are in Brussels where many of these shops line along the street. Only in 18th century was chocolate made known and popular in Belgium.

With the 20th century, chocolate became a confectionary and many producers started to release on the market the chocolate gift called praline - a great assortment of chocolates with various flavored fillings, such as nougat, coffee, hazelnut, cream, nuts and berries. Pralines were given the patent under the name of "Ballotin" and thus they became Ballotin de Pralines.

Chocolate Facts - The History of the Hershey Company

The Hershey Chocolate Company was founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey, to produce chocolate for covering his caramel candies. Six years later, the company was producing milk chocolate wafers, bars, and other confections.

The Industrial Revolution meant that Milton Hershey was able to keep his production costs down. Milk chocolate used to be something only the wealthy could afford but Hershey's lower prices meant that at last everybody could enjoy its wonderful flavor.

Milton decided to build a new factory in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, his birthplace. This location was especially good because it was close to the ports of both Philadelphia and New York, meaning he could get his cocoa beans and sugar easily. There were also dairy farms around Derry Township so the milk supply was also plentiful. This factory was fully operational by 1905 and there was no shortage of people who were keen to work there.

Hershey's Kisses and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Milton invented Kisses in 1907. The first ones were hand-wrapped in aluminum foil but the invention of a wrapping machine sped the process up significantly. The machine also added the famous plume on top of the Kiss candy and the name was trademarked in 1924.

Other famous products from the factory in the early twentieth century include chocolate chips, Krackel bars, Mr. Goodbar and Hershey's Syrup. The factory survived the Great Depression in the 1930s and was still running strong afterwards.

Their ration bars kept the troops going during World War II and other products soon appeared and gained popularity, including dark chocolate bars, bars with almonds and white cookies and cream bars. The factory began making the coating for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in the 1940s and Hershey took over the H B Reese Factory in 1963.

Today, the company is the leading candy manufacturer in the United States. The products are exported to more than ninety countries and there are nearly fourteen thousand employees all over the globe.

Net sales exceed four billion dollars a year. Eighty million Hershey's Kisses are produced every single day and this company has gone from strength to strength since it began in the late nineteenth century.

Using Chocolate in Dessert Recipes

Of course, this ingredient makes a very nice treat by itself, enjoyed with a cup of coffee in the afternoon or with a glass of liqueur after dinner. You can also use chocolate in dessert recipes, especially Mexican recipes which often tend to use it as a primary flavor.

Whether you want to make Cinco de Mayo recipes or a simple Mexican style mousse or cake, using quality ingredients is always a good idea and choosing Hershey's products means that you can give your homemade dessert recipes the best flavor. Of course, you might only need a few candies to decorate your dessert, pie, or mousse, so you can enjoy the rest of the box later!

Chocolate is a key ingredient in a lot of sweet Mexican recipes and it has been used in Mexican cuisine since the Inca and Aztec times. Chocolate features in many famous Cinco de Mayo recipes and other mouthwatering Mexican desserts.

The History of Chocolate

Chocolate as we know it today has ancient and mystical roots. Although today, it is commonly found in supermarkets and convenience stores, during its history, it has been a prized and sought after item, known as 'Food of the Gods', at times been a closely guarded secret and the cocoa bean has even been used as a currency.

Ancient civilisations including the Aztec and Maya cultivated the cocoa tree. The tree was found in jungles and rainforests in Central and Southern America. The cocoa tree produces pods which contain the cocoa beans. The beans were made into a drink by the Mayans who added water, spices, and vanilla to the ground beans. The drink was called 'xocolatl' meaning 'bitter water'.

The beans were used by merchants and traded for items including horses, cloth and ceremonial feathers.

Cocoa is linked in Mexican Indian mythology to the god Quetzalcoatl who is said to have left behind the cocao tree when he left the country.

Christopher Columbus brought the cocoa bean to Spain between 1502 - 1504. Hernan Cortes, the conquistador realised the value of the beans and took them to Spain in 1528. Sugar, milk and spices were added to the drink to sweeten the taste. 'Chocolate' became highly popular amongst the Spanish elite but it was still in short supply and they kept quiet about it for over 100 years.

But chocolate was not going to remain a secret. By 1606 it was in Italy after an Italian traveller had seen it in Central America and in 1615 it arrived in France. The French court adored chocolate, praising it and believing it had exceptional qualities including being good for the health.

Chocolate made its way to different areas of Europe and in the 1650s it arrived in England. The then expensive drink was popular amongst the rich and elite and in 1657 a Frenchman opened a hot chocolate shop in London. 'Chocolate Houses' spread and the drink became much more widely available.

The popularity of chocolate was growing and so new cocoa plantations were built in Africa, The Far East and The West Indies. As supply increased, the price fell which meant much more of the population could now afford it. Grocers, apothecaries and chemists manufactured the drink.

In the Victorian times a method was found to produce a chocolate 'bar' using cocoa powder, sugar and cocoa butter.

By the early 20th century, the chocolate bar was being manufactured on an industrial scale, with further developments to improve taste and add other ingredients.

So the chocolate bars we enjoy today have emerged through history with a rich, varied and adventurous story. The cocoa tree is known as 'Theobroma Cacao', translated as 'Food of The Gods' - and chocolate is now a little 'luxury' that can be widely enjoyed.
